Beyoncé and Jay-Z fans experienced a whirlwind of excitement over the weekend as documents alleging that the superstar couple was suing Rihanna and A$AP Rocky spread like wildfire online.
Just last week, a sexual assault lawsuit against Jay-Z—real name Shawn Carter—was "voluntarily dismissed with prejudice." This dismissal left fans perplexed when they encountered screenshots of a pending lawsuit mentioning the 55-year-old music mogul.
The attention-grabbing image revealed two lawsuits filed in the Virgin Islands District Court, one purportedly asserting that Jay-Z was taking legal action against A$AP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers.
However, discerning fans quickly identified several glaring inconsistencies that raised doubts about the authenticity of these lawsuits.
In the purported suit from Jay-Z, A$AP Rocky was referenced by his stage name rather than his legal name, which is a significant deviation from standard legal practice.
Additionally, Rihanna's name was mistakenly spelled "Robin" instead of her actual name, Robyn Rihanna Fenty. As if that weren't enough, fans also noted that the hearing was scheduled for 8 a.m. on March 8—a Saturday—further casting doubt on the legitimacy of these claims. As the debate intensified among fans, Jay-Z's label, Roc Nation, stepped in to set the record straight.
Their official account on X (formerly Twitter) responded succinctly with, "Don't be dumb." This statement appeared to cleverly reference A$AP's upcoming album while effectively quelling the swirling rumors.
Notably, both Rihanna and A$AP Rocky remain affiliated with Roc Nation for distribution, management, and publishing, underscoring their ongoing collaboration despite the sensational rumors.
The original X account that disseminated the image began to defend its assertions, posting a screenshot that purportedly showed the lawsuits in the court system when searched.
Their tweet declared, "In the matters of Knowles-Carter v. Fenty and Carter v. A$AP Rocky, I know my posts might sound outrageous, but I am not lying. Check this out for yourself." Legal expert Meghann Cuniff analyzed the situation and proposed that it might be an elaborate prank.
When a user speculated that a court clerk might have been testing the Electronic Case Filing (ECF) system with fictitious cases, she remarked, "Upon looking at the docket after seeing all my @'s, I concluded this MUST be some kind of prank when the only publicly available document in Knowles-Carter v. Fenty is labeled 'TRAINING DOCUMENT.'"
She added that while the cases are no longer listed in the Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER) system, they could persist on sites like Justia.com, leaving us to question how the courts will address the misuse of real celebrity names for testing purposes.
In a separate but related development, A$AP Rocky celebrated his recent exoneration from two counts of felony assault with a semiautomatic firearm, which followed a grueling three-week trial. He faced up to 20 years in prison for his alleged involvement in a 2021 incident with former friend Terell Ephron, known as A$AP Relli.
