Former The Smiths vocalist Morrissey has alleged that guitarist Johnny Marr declined a financially beneficial offer to reunite the band.
In light of the recent high-profile Oasis reunion, there was speculation among fans about the potential reconciliation of Morrissey, 65, and Marr, 60.

However, a statement posted on Morrissey's website on August 29 revealed that in June 2024, AEG Entertainment Group extended a financially lucrative offer for both Morrissey and Marr to embark on a global tour as 'The Smiths' throughout 2025. While Morrissey accepted the offer, Marr chose to ignore it.

Following The Smiths' break up in 1987, the band's bassist Andy Rourke passed away at the age of 59 in May of last year.
Marr announced the news via social media, expressing deep sadness and requesting privacy during the difficult time.

In 2022, Marr categorically stated that there was "zero chance" of collaborating with Morrissey again. Speaking on BBC Radio Two to Steve Wright, Marr revealed that it had been approximately 15 years since he had last had an in-person interaction with Morrissey, and their relationship had soured after Morrissey wrote an open letter to Marr, urging him to refrain from mentioning him in interviews. Marr responded to Morrissey's letter on Instagram, criticizing the outdated notion of an "open letter" and dismissively referring to it as "fake news."

Since The Smiths disbanded, there have been numerous calls for a reunion, a possibility that both Morrissey and Marr have consistently denied. Following the split, Morrissey pursued a successful solo career, releasing multiple chart-topping albums such as Viva Hate, Vauxhall And I, and Ringleader Of The Tormentors.

Earlier this year, Morrissey cited "medical supervision for physical exhaustion" as the reason for canceling shows in the US. However, he has since resumed touring, While Marr continues to tour as a special guest to New Order.
